Emetophobia
What is Emetophobia?
Emetophobia is when you have an overwhelming and often obsessional fear of yourself or other people being sick. Emetophobia is more common than you may realise although you probably won't spot a sufferer as they tend to keep it a very closely-guarded secret. The anxiety about vomiting a sufferer feels ruins almost every day. Many emetophobes are highly skilled in the art of making excuses to avoid potentially difficult situations that might induce nausea such as travelling or becoming pregnant.

Some of the symptoms of Emetophobia
Quite often emetophobia has a severe impact on the sufferer’s life. Emetophobes may have some of the following tendencies as well as others not listed:-
  • Hating or avoiding public transport especially flying and if travelling, often insisting they travel by car and that they are the driver (so they are in control).
  • Being meticulous about food hygiene, especially when eating out in case unusual food or poor food hygiene makes them sick.
  • Limiting the amount of alcohol intake for fear of vomiting.
  • If pregnant, many women become worried about morning sickness.
  • Avoiding medical treatment including surgery or even taking medication, until potential side effects of drugs have been checked.
  • Avoiding hospitals and doctors surgeries.
  • When a member of their household, or a close acquaintance, suffers an illness - emetophobes will be extremely anxious that they might contract the illness themselves. Many will virtually starve themselves for the following few days until the likely incubation period has passed without them becoming ill. Some emetophobes are misdiagnosed as suffering from anorexia nervosa or another eating disorder.
  • Emetophobes often have a morbid obsession regarding their fear. For example, an emetophobe who fears others vomiting will constantly be on the lookout for others who may be vomiting or about to vomit.

Successful treatment for Emetophobia with hypnotherapy
Hypno-Analysis is one of the best and most successful ways to treat emetophobia. Many therapists or psychologists do not know how to treat emetophobia properly and offer quick fixes which do not last. The type of treatment I use has had an amazing amount of success with many sufferers of this vomit phobia being released from its grasp for good.

Hypno-Analysis is used to gain access to important emotions which have been bottled up in our mind. By releasing these emotions and reviewing them in a safe, relaxing environment and with “adult” eyes this time around we can interpret the event correctly, therefore removing the root cause of the phobia forever giving a lasting sense of lightness and relief from the symptom. Success Stories
“Dear Emily – I want to let you know that I’m doing great since my hypnosis sessions with you. As you know I’d tried quite a few different types of therapy to help me overcome my emetophobia including cognitive behavioural therapy but none of them were 100% effective. Until I tried hypnotherapy! I was impressed with your professional and caring approach, you seemed to really want me to get better. Before, my fear of being sick had ruled my life. I had panic attacks because I was scared of people being sick near me, or not being able to get to a bathroom if I felt sick myself. My phobia made me feel so isolated and withdrawn. When I was pregnant with my little girl Rose, I was so terrified about morning sickness, I had to get my doctor to give me anti-sickness drugs for emergencies. Well that’s all a thing of the past now, and I have you to thank”.
Helen S, Buckingham

“I didn’t like seeing other people being sick but my main fear was being sick myself. It was a fear of the physical sensations - the heavy stomach, the churning, the nausea, the retching, the taste, the smell, the mess. I don’t think anyone likes being sick but my phobia of vomiting was totally out of control. I was paranoid about food poisoning – I had fridge thermometers, food thermometers and goodness knows what and I also had a very restricted diet. If somebody came into work having been off for a couple of days and they said to me that it's because they've had a stomach bug and because they've been sick then it really scared me because it's horrible and I was always scared I'll get it. So whenever I went past them, I’d hold my breath. Going through therapy took commitment from me and at times it wasn’t the easiest thing I’ve ever done, but at all times you made me feel really safe and warm. It was worth every minute because now my life has totally changed, I feel on top of the world as I no longer have this morbid fear of being sick”.
